Curriculum

In the Snowflake School District, we utilize Beyond Textbooks to ensure clearly defined learning objectives for each grade level. Our curriculum is both viable and guaranteed, meaning that all students have equitable access to essential learning experiences and that the curriculum can be fully learned within the allotted instructional time. These areas of study align with both state standards and assessments. Testing is not an isolated event; rather, it serves as a valuable tool for teachers to guide instruction and for students to demonstrate their learning.

To ensure all students achieve proficiency, we implement a Response to Intervention (RTI) framework. RTI is a multi-tiered approach that provides targeted support to students who struggle or do not demonstrate proficiency within the allotted instructional time. Through RTI, we reteach essential concepts, offer additional instructional time, and provide interventions tailored to individual student needs, ensuring every student has the opportunity to succeed.

Beyond Textbooks

In addition to being a broad educational philosophy, Beyond Textbooks (BT) is also a curriculum resource developed by the Vail Unified School District in Arizona. Snowflake Unified follows this structured, standards-based approach to education while incorporating innovative teaching practices. BT serves as a digital instructional framework used by numerous schools and districts to enhance student achievement.

Features of Beyond Textbooks by Vail Unified:

  • Comprehensive Curriculum Mapping – Aligns instruction with state and national standards to ensure educational consistency and rigor.

  • Instructional Resources – Provides teachers with digital materials, lesson plans, and assessments to streamline instruction.

  • Data-Driven Instruction – Uses student performance data to guide and improve teaching strategies for targeted learning.

  • Collaboration & Best Practices – Encourages teachers to share resources and effective instructional strategies to enhance student outcomes.

By blending traditional and innovative educational strategies, Beyond Textbooks helps educators move away from rigid, textbook-based instruction to create engaging, flexible, and effective learning experiences.

Beyond Textbooks and the Four Essential Questions

The Beyond Textbooks framework is guided by four essential questions that drive instruction, assessment, and student success. These questions help educators focus on what students need to learn, how to measure learning, and how to support both struggling and advanced students.

The Four Essential Questions:

  1. What do we want students to learn?

    • Teachers use curriculum mapping and standards-based instruction to clearly define learning objectives.

    • Instruction prioritizes essential concepts and skills aligned with state and national standards.

  2. How do we know if they’ve learned it?

    • Frequent formative and summative assessments are used to measure student understanding.

    • Data-driven instruction helps track progress and identify learning gaps.

  3. What do we do if they haven’t learned it?

    • Intervention strategies include targeted small-group instruction, re-teaching, and differentiated learning opportunities.

    • Additional support through tutoring, scaffolding, and personalized instruction helps struggling students succeed.

  4. What do we do if they already know it?

    • Students who demonstrate mastery receive enrichment opportunities, such as higher-order thinking challenges, project-based learning, and acceleration pathways.

    • Extension activities ensure that advanced learners continue to grow and engage in meaningful learning experiences.

By focusing on these four essential questions, Snowflake Unified ensures that every student receives the support and challenge they need to succeed. This approach fosters a dynamic, responsive, and student-centered educational experience that moves beyond traditional textbook-based instruction.
